I love reading children’s books and I have decided to start reviewing some of my favorites here on my blog. My first pick is Caldecott Medal winner, A Sick Day for Amos McGee. Written by Philip C. Stead and illustrated by Erin E. Stead and published by Roaring Brook Press. This book was also voted Best Illustrated Children’s Book by the New York Times.
The story is about Amos McGee, a zoo worker and his friends at the zoo. But one day, Amos doesn’t show up at work because he is sick. His friends wonder where he is. You will have to read the book to find out what happens after that! The pages are beautifully illustrated in pencil and a wood blocking technique with subtle coloring. It was fun to see all of the little details, like Amos’ teddy bear and the penguin’s balloon. Amos reminded me of a Mr. Rogers type character. So kind and loveable. The story has a powerful message of friendship and caring for one another. This book is for younger children, but a very enjoyable read for anyone.

Isn’t this the best book? I went to a talk with the Stead’s this past fall. They spoke about their illustration process, it was pretty interesting.
